Why I Vote…

I was just sitting here reflecting on growing up during the 60’s and 70’s. I remember how close neighborhoods were and how people would help their neighbors. I also remember how integration changed all that (we can discuss this in a later post). I also remember the white and colored signs. Sitting on one side of the counter and eating barbecue while white people sit on the other side. We have a place here, Taylor Café that is still set up like it was in the 60’s with one jukebox (on the black side playing the blues) one jukebox (on the white side, playing country). When you go in there people still sit separated by sides. I go in to get barbecue (which is really good) but refuse to be served on the side that was considered the black side back in the day J.

I also remember watching TV and seeing the riots and marches that was happening so that we could have the same rights as everyone else, especially the right to vote. Seem like election time was full of activity because black people would organize to make sure people could get to the polls to vote. Being fortunate enough to see and understand the struggle, especially as I got older, made voting something special to me. When President Obama was elected I remember thinking about my mom and all our descendents that work for this but never got a chance to see it.  The emotions I felt cannot be described! Even I did not think I would see it in my lifetime.
